Michigan tight end Carson Butler, who had been kicked off the team last spring, has returned to practice, coach Lloyd Carr said.
Butler allegedly was involved in an assault of a fellow student in March. He recently was exonerated.
"He's trying to do some things he's been asked to do," Carr said Tuesday.
Mike Massey, however, has won the starting job at tight end.
Offensive lineman Alex Mitchell suffered an undisclosed injury in practice Monday, Carr said, and is expected to miss the season opener against Appalachian State and possibly the second game against Oregon.
Backup tailback Carlos Brown, who is recovering from surgery to repair a broken right hand, could return to practice next week.
